La Mariniére was originally created for the French navy. The uniform was first co-opted by French sailors and mariners, becoming the iconic marinière. In the early 20th century Coco Chanel adopted La Mariniére with her menswear-inspired fashion simplicity. Ever since La Mariniére has been repeated by great designers such as Gaultier and Galliano.
